Silvia Carrillo Mr.Wince Psychology 03/07/2024 Unraveling: Through the Eyes of Crochet The unraveling of the brain, my interpretation of what I’ve learned this quarter. There are four topics I chose to focus on for my course and project; Consciousness, Sensation, Memory, and Perception. I chose to represent these in my project by the structure of my artwork. My idea started with the topic of sensation, I wanted to explore this topic in my project by creating something physical that any human could play with and explore the senses of. You can pull apart my crochet brain and put it back together as many times as you want. This was how I chose to put a play on Unravel. There are many different ways you can put this brain together, it's all up to perception and interpretation. It can resemble a brain, or even a blob depending on how you twist it. I believe this is an accurate representation of how everyones brain is different and unique. There are endless possibilities on how to shape the brain and all it requires is creativity. Sensation was a huge part of my project, it all played into the texture I chose for my yarn, to the intricate bunches of brain matter I crocheted. Memory played a huge part in the making of my project as well. I learned to crochet two years ago but it was only until recently that I picked up the hobby again. Memory is a beautiful thing because although I had taken a break from crochet I could still remember the very basic steps of how to start a chain and the bunch of stitches incorporated into my project. If it wasn’t for memory I wouldn’t have been able to create this project. It’s just another example of how fascinating the brain is. Another part of my brain that represents perception is the color of the yarn I used. I decided to use a color-changing yarn to represent all the topics I learned this quarter. Blue represents consciousness, purple represents memory, yellow represents sensation, green represents perception, and pink represents intelligence, which is a brief topic I learned about even though it wasn’t required. Another reason for the color yarn I chose is due to the intensity and vibrancy of the yarn. I chose bright colors full of emotion and life to represent the consciousness of the brain. It relates to the consciousness of the brain due to the alertness and the act of being awake. These colors are so stimulating to the brain because it wakes up all signals of the brain. The pieces of my brain can also be a representation of the different states of consciousness like conscious, unconscious, and the levels of awareness.
